What is Pickleball?
Pickleball is a fast-growing racket sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. It’s played on a small court with a paddle and a lightweight plastic ball with holes (similar to a whiffle ball).
Here is why you should jump on the court:
-
Zero learning curve: Unlike tennis, where you can spend months just trying to keep a serve in play, pickleball lets you play actual, fun rallies within 15 minutes of picking up a paddle. The underhand serve and lightweight equipment make basic mechanics intuitive right away.
-
Low impact, high calorie burn: Because the court is roughly a third the size of a tennis court, you do not need to sprint long distances. You get a solid cardio workout burning around 300 to 400 calories per hour without putting extreme wear and tear on your knees and lower back.
-
Intensely social: The compact court layout keeps players close enough to chat and banter between points. Most venues run open-play formats where you can show up solo, throw your paddle in the rotation, and meet a dozen new people in an afternoon.
-
Fascinating strategic depth: Don't let the small court fool you at higher levels, it becomes a fast-paced game of chess. Winning is not about who hits the hardest; it's about patience, placement, drop shots, and quick-reflex exchanges at the "kitchen" line.
-
It's inexpensive to start: All you need is a basic paddle and a pair of court shoes and it offers a rare mix of genuinely good exercise and pure entertainment.
